Block One Homework Assignment

Due: Friday November 18th, 2011

Write a paragraph explaining how you would feel if your family decided to move to another country for a year. What would be some of the positives from this experience? What challenges would you face? Think about friends, school, language, food, culture. How would you overcome some of these challenges?

Also, I would like you to make a text to self connection for Block one.

Text to self connection - when a book you are reading reminds you of something in your own life.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • What does this story remind you of?
  • Can you relate to the characters in the story?
  • Does anything in this story remind you of anything in your own life?

Think about the examples from class:
*Parents saying something embarrassing
*First time on a plane
*Taking flak for something you are interested in
*Nicknames
*Being homesick

Students have been asked to give a 'Book Talk' on a book they are currently reading or a book they have just finished. After conferencing with students individually, I've asked them to complete one of the following over the long weekend:

1. Finish reading your novel
2. Finish writing the rough copy of your Book Talk
3. Complete your recipe cards for your presentation

Enjoy the long weekend:)

Welcome to Ms. Pike's Blog! I will be posting assignments and other important information to help keep students organized and to inform parents. I'm really looking forward to great school year and want to help all students achieve success. Please contact me if you have any questions, 888-8470 ext. 114.

Our names are an important part of our identity, and during the first few days of school, we are naturally focused on matching the names with the faces in our class. Students have been researching their name through books, the internet and family interviews. I have asked students to write one page on the information that they have found and share it in small groups. This assignment is due on Tuesday, September 13th.

Have a great weekend:)
